While the U.S.S. Enterprise is on a routine mission in deep space, a beautiful young woman suddenly beams onto the bridge and renders the crew unconscious with the aid of a wrist-device. When the bridge officers come to they discover that Lieutenant Commander Spock has disappeared from the bridge; Doctor McCoy then contacts Captain Kirk and demands his presence in sickbay immediately. Here Kirk finds Spock's body lying on a diagnostic table, on full life support - and with his brain missing. McCoy informs the captain that someone has removed the Vulcan's brain using highly-advanced technology, and if it is not returned to Spock's body within twenty-four hours he will die. After Kirk orders the Enterprise to purse the mysterious woman's spaceship by following its ion trail, they track the vessel to the sixth planet in the Sigma Draconis system. Kirk takes a landing party and beams down to the surface of the frozen world; here they encounter the Morgs, a surface-dwelling primitive culture solely comprised of men, and the Eymorgs, an all-female race that lives deep below the surface. Although the Eymorgs live in a highly technological society, they do not understand how their machines actually work; instead they are merely trained to perform various tasks by the 'Great Teacher', a complex computer system left behind by the ancient technologists that once lived on the planet. Having created a device to remotely control Spock's brainless body, Doctor McCoy takes Vulcan down to the planet to join Kirk and the others. After locating Kara, the woman who beamed aboard their ship, the Starfleet officers learn that the Eymorgs have now connected Spock's brain to their central control system; now revered as the 'Controller', the Vulcan's brain is to be used run their system for the next ten-thousand years...
